5 Fascinating TED Talks About Language Learning Thatll Light a Fire Under You

5 Fascinating TED Talks About Language Learning Thatll Light a Fire Under You 5 Fascinating TED Talks About Language Learning Thatll Light a Fire Under You Want to sound super smart in front of your friends?Want to do it in more than one language?Theres a TED Talk for that.In fact, there are a bunch.TED Talks are a fast, entertaining way to pick up new knowledge on all kinds of topics,  from architecture to zoology to, of course, languages. Many language lovers have puzzled over the complexities of foreign language acquisition, and some bright sparks have turned their insights into fascinating TED Talks.Below, youll find five great ones to help you study smarter and stay motivated on your path towards fluency. Some are quite theoretical, so Ill also give you an excellent reason to watch each one, plus tips on how they can help you with your language learning on a practical level. 5 Fascinating TED Talks About Language Learning Thatll Light a Fire Under You4 Reasons to Learn a New LanguageJohn McWhorter is a world-leading expert in second language acquisitionâ€"so he should know a thing or two about this topic! In this talk, he asks what the point of learning a language other than English is, considering English is becoming the main language of communication worldwide. His reasons are:If you ever want to understand another culture, language is a crucial aspect. You cant expect to really know another country until you speak some of its language.Language learning has health benefits. If you speak two or more languages, youre better at multitasking and dementia is less likely to set in.Its never been easier to teach yourself another language.  You dont have to go to class or buy fancy courses. Any language you want is in your pocket. Its a lot of fun! Feeling unfamiliar sounds rolling around your mouth, toying with word orderâ€"its an invigorating experience. Why You Should WatchOne simple word: motivation!Lack of motivation is probably the biggest reason why more people dont learn foreign languages. When other tasks take priority, or when language roadblocks spring up, it can be easy to  lose the drive to learn. This TE D Talk is the one to watch to get excited about language study, from someone whos clearly excited about it himself. Whats more, itll be useful whether youre just starting out and looking for some motivation, or deep in your studies and trying to stay focused.Thats why its first up on this list. Once youve gathered the motivation, maybe this one should be nextOne Simple Method to Learn Any LanguageThis is a talk from a TEDx, one of the independent TED-affiliated events. Scott Young and Vat Jaiswal are the speakers, and they claim to have one simple technique to learn any language.Young and Jaiswal argue that the reason early language learning tends to meet with heavy resistance is the zone of fear.  In other words, youre too embarrassed to speak. If you can find a way to push past this, theres less frustration and more reward. But how?The solution is: dont speak English.Easier said than done, right? But theres a good reason behind it. If you refuse to speak English (or whatever your n ative language is), youll be able to learn the most important words of your target language very quickly. Youll even overlearn, getting set words and phrases deeply embedded into your mind.Youll also develop linguistic workarounds, finding ways to say what you mean in the target language before resorting to a translator. To demonstrate the success of this theory, the speakers went to Spain, Brazil, China and Korea to learn the native languages using no English at allâ€"not even with each other. The video clip they share shows its success, with them having relatively complex conversations in each language within three months. Why You Should WatchThe no-English rule is a practical way to pick up a new language fast. Ive been lucky enough to have moved to another country (Spain) to improve my language. Although I was working with English speakers, I deliberately lived with Spanish people who didnt speak English so I knew I had some people in my life that I needed to use only Spanish with .My ability in the language skyrocketed as a result!Even if you cant move to another country, you can apply the no-English rule to a limited context, such as with an individual person. Find one person, either locally or online through a language exchange platform;  commit to only speaking your target language with them; start speaking! And there are other ways to accomplish this goal online. FluentU is an especially useful tool since it makes foreign language immersion entertainingâ€"youll want to keep using only your target language! On FluentU, youll get real-world videos like movie clips, inspiring talks, news broadcasts and more, whichve been transformed into a language learning experience. Each video comes with captions you can click for an in-context definition and native pronunciation. Youll also see other videos that use the word, giving you a full understanding of how to use it just from target language context.FluentU also creates flashcards and exercises based on each video , so you can make sure you remember new words and keep your brain in foreign language-mode. Challenge yourself to use the no-English rule alongside a FluentU free trial and watch how quickly your skills grow!A Word Game to Communicate in Any LanguageAjit Narayanan works with children with autism. They struggle with what he calls abstraction, or thinking of an object in terms other than itself. This leads to problems with language: if you think about it, a word is nothing more than an abstract representation of an object or concept. So he developed a tool to communicate without grammar. Instead of arranging words as a sentence, you arrange them as a map. Filters are added to demonstrate things like negation and different tenses. Children with autism could make sentences more effectively using this system than English. This led him to think about second language acquisition. When you learn language as an adult, you typically do it through comparisons/translations to your native language â€"as Young and Jaiswal noted.Narayanan realized his system could become a tool to help any language learner, even those without autism, naturally construct sentences in a new language without relying on their native one as a bridge. Why You Should WatchAlthough Narayanans motivation is children with autism, he ingeniously discusses the impact on learning language as an adult. His ideas can help you to remove yourself from your native language when learning a new one, using semantic maps to escape the constraints of your mother grammar. How much does this help in practice? Thats for you to decide, but I can see clear benefits if youre learning a language thats significantly grammatically distinct from your native one, such as an English speaker learning Korean.Learn to Read Chinese… with Ease!ShaoLan Hsueh realizes how complex Chinese writing looks to non-natives. But luckily, shes here to help! She has a handy system for picking up the language in writing. She shares eight radicals, which form the base of a number of different words. She then shows how you can expand your vocabulary to 32 characters by combining the radicals, as well as sharing thematic pictorials to make memorization far easier and faster!Once you have the 32 characters, you can move on from there to start building phrases. Why You Should WatchThis is only a short video and its specifically about Chinese, but itll be useful to anyone  learning a language with a radically unfamiliar alphabet.  ShaoLan will show you how picking it up can be far simpler than you thought!Don’t Kill Your LanguageIn Lebanon, not speaking English is sometimes seen as backwards and uneducated. In this video, Suzanne Talhouk delivers an impassioned defense of protecting the Arabic language. She argues that mastery of your mother tongue is crucial for creative expression in other languages. She also notes that the only way to kill a nation is to kill its language, which is the reason some countries such as France have created special institutions to protect their languages. This doesnt mean all English words in Arabic contexts are banned: an English word like cool or internet can convey a specific meaning that Arabic speakers might want to express. She just wants Arabic speakers to respect their own language and use it as fully and thoroughly as possible. Why You Should WatchTED originated in the U.S., so it makes sense that most of these videos are in English; nevertheless, it felt right to include a non-English one in here, as itll be perfect for a language learner like you! For me, it was a fascinating insight into some of the issues with the English invasion of other languages and dialects. This talk is a great way to understand the importance of a multiplicity of different tongues. It should give you a sense of pride in your own language, as well as underlining that you can exist in an increasingly interconnected world, respecting both your own language and those of others. We hope these five TE D Talks leave you feeling psyched, smart and ready to get fluent! Happy watching!

College Grads 5 Ways to Polish up Your Online Presence

College Grads 5 Ways to Polish up Your Online Presence Graduating College in the Spring? 5 Ways to Polish up Your Online Presence Graduating College in the Spring? 5 Ways to Polish up Your Online Presence Students who will be graduating soon should consider how their online presence reflects their actual personality or how they want it to reflect their real personality. Employers will be looking for a responsible, reasonable adult who knows that theres a time and place for most things and who can represent their company in a positive light. College graduation is not the time to have a 100% open relationship with the internet and work is not the place to be connected to social media. There are few things soon-to-be graduates can do to polish up their online presence and have a better chance of being hired into a professional career. 1. Privacy Settings Please Its crucial for soon-to-be graduates to adjust their privacy settings on their social media pages. Potential employers want to know that applicants know how to separate work and fun and behave in a manner that reflects their company culture. Grads should adjust privacy settings to be as strict as possible. Make sure that what employers can see is positive or neutral and represents you as a professional (READ: Fullerton College Tutor Tips: Work-Life Balance in College). 2. Match Your Image to the Company Culture Another thing college seniors can do is think about how their image relates to the companys image. This will most likely be affected by a students LinkedIn profile. Students wishing to go into a non-profit, for example, should make sure that any recent volunteer experience is readily displayed. Future journalists should provide a link to any freelance articles etc. If the company is very serious, the student’s LinkedIn profile and social media page should also be. If the company is innovative, the student’s profile should be progressive and so on. 3. Your Personal Life is Personal Every person is entitled to a personal life. However, it should be separate from work and not displayed where a potential supervisor or colleague can see it. Soon-to-be graduates should be careful of whom they allow seeing their social media pages and, if theyre connected with networking contacts for current colleagues, they should be sure to keep their most personal life offline. Its amazing how quickly a small comment can make it back to the wrong person in the office. 4. Avoid Controversy and Excess Negativity Students might be used to discussing controversial or negative topics online. Unfortunately, many companies will not want this negativity in the workplace. The office environment is meant to stay neutral and allow each and every employee to feel comfortable while getting their job done. Avoid bringing such negativity into the workplace by first taking it off of online profiles. Try and keep things positive or, at least, neutral during a job search (READ: 5 Reasons to Learn a Second Language in College). 5. Dont Discuss Your New Job Probably most importantly, its essential that recent grads don’t discuss their new job online once theyre hired. Although its great to let friends and family know that you are now working at a new company, thats about all you should say. Lots of information will be confidential and should never leave the office. Additionally, if new employees don’t like certain aspects of their job, they should always keep these comments private. It can be unpleasant if an employer finds out that an employee has been telling 850+ friends that they really didnt want to work late on Friday. What may just seem like venting to you can be taken very personally by a colleague. In Short When students start to look for their first post-graduate job its a good idea to look at all online and social media profiles and clean them up. Although its unclear how many employers do social media checks, its much better for them to find a positive and professional online presence if they do go looking. For a while, its better to keep personal topics offline and save the difficult or negative discussion for face-to-face socializing. How to Use Them in Chemistry

How to Use Them in ChemistryDefinition of atoms is very important. Not many people understand the term 'atom' well enough to define it. The next time you are with a friend and someone asks you what an atom is, do not ask her about science or where she learned it from. Ask her to define the term 'atom'.In today's world, it is no secret that atoms have their own level of importance. An atom is a small element, sometimes solid, that holds the properties of other elements and vibrates. They are of two kinds, positive and negative. The positive ones have more electrons than the negative ones. That means that they can only be a part of the chemical process. Now, you have already made up your mind about the importance of atoms. So, if you really want to learn how to use the atoms as a tool in chemistry, I suggest you start from basic. Since they are very important in the chemical process, I have some tips for you.The first thing you need to remember about the definition of atoms is that the two types of atoms are always separate and you can't mix them. You can say that they are an organized and separate system. This would mean that you cannot mix them with other substances. That is why you have to avoid mixing the substances together when doing chemistry. Since the atoms are always two separate units, it is only natural that they will only be separated when working on chemistry experiments. The second tip to remember about definition of atoms is that there are two places where this word is used. One of these definitions is in the chemical process. The other one is in atomic group. The first definition is more obvious and simple to define. This definition is the one you will hear when people refer to substances. This definition does not take into account the chemistry term 'atom'. That is why I use the 'definition' in the first paragraph. It is important because the chemistry definition is more precise and less controversial. The second definition on definition of atoms is much more interesting and controversial. This definition will be something you will read in textbooks when you are studying chemistry. This definition is used in the atomic description of the substance. It is important because it describes the essence of atoms. After reading the atomic description, you will be able to use atoms in your chemistry lab. Since they are an organized and separated system, they should be used carefully.

Class Schedule for Chemist Course at Northwest University

Class Schedule for Chemist Course at Northwest UniversityThe following are the different classes that you will find in Northwest University Chemistry classes. One of the primary courses in a chemistry class is an Introduction to Chemistry course, in which students are introduced to the basic chemical process and properties of different substances. This course can be taken in an adult, junior high or senior high school, or online at Northwest University. The syllabus for this course is being used at all of the universities around the United States.Introduction to Molecular Sciences - This course deals with a way to describe and represent chemical compounds using a one or more of the five macromolecules: oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur and carbon. Students will learn about the structure of these molecules, how they interact with one another, the reactions that take place between them, and how each of the macromolecules react with the others. Students will also learn the terms used i n chemistry, which are used to refer to a mixture of two or more chemical elements, to avoid confusion.Biochemistry and Molecular Cell Biology - The curriculum at Northwest University include some courses that teach students to do research on specific problems in biological studies. For example, in the classroom, biochemistry students will learn about the various substances that act as hormones or proteins in the body, as well as how hormones or proteins interact with one another. The programs include a three-part project, which involves experiments to examine how a particular substance influences the functioning of a part of the body.Molecular Biology - This course focuses on how cells and organisms in the body function. It provides a broad overview of the cellular level. It is useful for those studying biology, but also has applications in the medical field. A student will be able to use this course to develop knowledge of cell biology and their processes, as well as help them und erstand how genes are regulated by exposure to certain substances.General Chemistry - This course is intended for both students and teachers, who will learn a great deal about the chemical and physical forces, with the aim of becoming more familiar with the things that make up the world. In the classroom, a student will learn to combine various components into new chemical mixtures. A teacher will be able to give a student an understanding of how to measure concentrations of substances, how such measurement methods are used, and the role that various elements play in the building blocks of chemistry. This course is open to all undergraduate chemistry majors and teaches students how to investigate the properties of substances, which is important to study chemistry as an academic field.Organic Chemistry - This course teaches students how to relate chemical reactions and chemicals. It is important to be familiar with the properties of elements such as carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulf ur, because many of the reactions that occur in chemistry happen when a chemical is combined with these elements. Students will learn the different properties of the elements that are needed for a specific chemical reaction, as well as how to test and analyze a substance for any defects. They will also learn about the way that a substance can react chemically with other substances.Neurochemistry - This course includes learning about the central nervous system and the interactions of chemicals with nerve cells. Students will learn how to conduct experiments to test the affects of chemicals on the brain. The course focuses on learning how cells in the brain react to chemicals and how chemical levels in the brain influence the behavior of the body. While this class is taught in the laboratory setting, students will learn about how the nervous system and the organs in the body operate and process chemicals.

The Most Popular Anime in Japan.

The Most Popular Anime in Japan. What Anime Should I Watch? Here are Japan’s Favourites. ChaptersWhat is the Best Anime Series?People in the West â€" at least those who have never watched it â€" recognise anime by its characters’ large eyes, their colourful and stylised hair, and the shows’ elaborate, fantastical plotlines. This is the distinctive art style we recognise in animes â€" from things like Pokémon to Dragon Ball, Spirited Away to Death Note. And, in our country, we associate this particular genre with Japanese culture â€" thinking that this precisely is what defines Japanese popular culture. And that this is what Japanese animation is like. We’d be right and wrong in our assessment here. Because whilst anime makes up a huge proportion of the Japanese film and television market â€" and indeed much of the world’s animated shows â€" that style that is so recognisable to us is not the extent of Japanese anime. In fact, many of the anime shows that we know are not necessarily so popular in Japan. Just as there are many more anime series in Japan that we just don’t know over here. So, What, then, is Anime?Anime is really just short for animation, surprisingly enough. Whilst in English, the term has come to specifically designate Japanese animation techniques, in Japan, it refers to animated productions from all over the world, non-Japanese as much as Japanese.Given this, it’s hard to say that anime really constitutes a genre as such â€" and the style we see as specifically anime here is not really so clearly defined. It isn’t all big eyes and wacky hair.Rather, there are as many different styles of anime as there are animators, artists, and animation studios. You’ll probably know studios like Studio Ghibli, Toei Animation, Kyoto Animation, and Gainax â€" and, if you do, you’ll know that their styles are quite significantly different. And if you are anime fans, you’ll easily spot the difference between Osamu Tezuka and Hayao Miyazaki. This fact also complicates the questions, ‘what’s the best anime in Japan?’, or ‘what a re the most popular anime movies?’. It’s a tricky question because, in Japan, anime can be for everyone â€" and different anime characters are made for different audiences.Gundam, for example, was aimed originally at boys, whilst Cowboy Bebop, with more sophisticated themes, was aimed at adult audiences. Meanwhile, Fruits Basket was intended for a young female audience.Find out more about Japan's culture of anime! However, we have given it a go. And, like with any best of list, we know that we might upset part of the anime fandom. Some of these, you’ll find, are bigger with an international audience than they necessarily are with a Japanese one. But this is a testament to the massive global appeal of this style of art.So, from full-length films to fantasy series, here are some of the most popular anime series around.Read about the best characters in anime here!Tiger and Bunny.According to a poll in Japan, the Tiger and Bunny franchise came out as the most popular anime production of all time. The characters came from an original manga, were made into an animated series, video games, a stage play, and live action films.Generally, then, we can say that it is pretty popular as a franchise. It takes place in a futuristic New York City in which superheroes are sponsored by companies and they compete to be the ‘King of Heroes’ â€" as their heroism is broadcast on television. It’s been available subbed on Netflix, by the way, if you want to check it out.Love Live! School Idol ProjectAnother of the most popular franchises in Japan is known as Long Live! â€" which has, again, spawned, a whole range of different media projects too. Beyond the original anime and manga, you’ve now got CDs, music videos, and video games. It became something of a cultural sensation.Rather than the fantasy anime we are familiar with, however, this is a simple story of a high school student and her friends who become ‘idols’ â€" young singer celebrities â€" to save their Japanese school. We told you that anime is a lot more than we initially assume.Cardcaptor SakuraOne of the massively successful anime from the late nineties is Cardcaptor Sakura â€" or, in the heavily criticised American version, Cardcaptors. Recognised as one of the best shoujo manga series â€" or a manga aimed at young girls â€" this was transformed into a seventy-part anime series. It also won a hell of a lot of awards. The story revolves around a girl called Sakura, who receives magical powers after releasing into the world a pack of magical cards. The series focuses on her retrieving these cards. It’s a great example of the famous genre of anime known as ‘magical girl’, which features, surprisingly enough, a girl who can use magic. The seventy episodes in the series were cut to around forty for the American version, which were dubbed and criticised for making the plot unintelligible.Learn how to draw anime! The iconic 'magical girl' anime, SakuraGin TamaThe manga, Gin Tama, is one of the bestselling series in Japan â€" and, as is the trend, this has been made into everything from a live action film, Gintama, to a light novel. The series is set in the Edo period â€" the years from the seventeenth to the mid-nineteenth century in Japan â€" but one in which the country is occupied by aliens. Gintoki Sakata is the main character, a samurai who fights against the aliens and helps to rescue their prisoners. It’s known for its comedy and its social themes and it has been hugely influential.Digimon AdventureDigimon was seen by Anglophone audiences as, essentially, a rip-off of the hugely successful Pokémon. However, whilst Pokémon’s plot arc was perhaps a little limited, Digimon became much more popular and much more critically acclaimed. Its characters are known as ‘digital monsters’, which populate a digital world into which some children are transported. Realising that they are destin ed to be the saviours of this world, the children embark on a quest to do exactly that.Fullmetal AlchemistOne of the bestselling, highest-grossing, and critically acclaimed anime and manga in Japan is Fullmetal Alchemist. This is a series that tells the story of the Elric brothers’ pursuit of the Philosopher’s Stone. Set in the Industrial Revolution, these characters had tried, through alchemy, to bring their mother back to life, by using parts of their bodies. However, the experiment didn’t work, and they became permanently damaged. The series sold over seventy million copies worldwide.Dragon Ball ZAn enduringly popular franchise, Dragon Ball is one of the most recognisable products of Japanese anime culture. Its films have made nearly a billion dollars across the world â€" with only the live action American-made movie flopping at the box office â€" and the multimedia franchise as a whole raking in over twenty billion dollars. It’s a simple plot: Son Goku, throughout his life , travels the world in search of the Dragon Balls, objects that release dragons and grant wishes. Simultaneously, a wide variety of villains pursue them too.Dragon Ball is also the second-highest selling series of manga in history.Neon Genesis EvangelionIf it wasn’t for Neon Genesis Evangelion, anime might not be as popular as it is today. Owing to a financial crisis in Japan during the eighties and nineties, people weren’t producing as much as they were, and the cultural industries were stagnating.Neon Genesis Evangelion intervened into this landscape, offering a sophisticated, original, and ultimately hugely popular development in the world of anime. After a global disaster, Shinji, a teenager, is called to fight the Angels by piloting an Evangelion, a ‘mecha’ or human-controlled robot. It was these figures of the Evangelions that made the series so influential â€" and you only need to look at its grossing to see the franchise’s global popularity.Princess MononokePrincess Mononoke is the highest-grossing anime film in the world. It was also the highest-grossing film in Japan ever, until Hayao Miyazaki, the director made Spirited Away, which overtook it.It’s a wonderful film essentially about the environment. Based somewhere between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, the film depicts a prince’s involvement in a struggle between the spirits of the forest and those who plunder that forest’s resources. The film has won a whole heap of awards since its release in 1997 â€" and it cemented the place of Studio Ghibli among the big anime studios of Japan. It has also been a massive influence on the world of anime, computer games, and manga â€" with its complex moral message and its powerful characterisation.Read everything about anime! Beating Burnout Before It Burns Your Career - Introvert Whisperer

Introvert Whisperer / Beating Burnout Before It Burns Your Career - Introvert Whisperer Beating Burnout Before It Burns Your Career It’s a high-speed, ninety-five in a nine to five kind of life. Burnout feels like a hidden evil in your benefits package, but it’s something everyone’s come to expect and accept as “just part of the job.” If you’re experiencing burnout, you’ll notice that deadlines stretch out and never seem to end. You may feel apathetic toward aspects of your life that you should feel excited and grateful for. The pounding in your ribcage isn’t chest pains: It’s adrenaline, right? You get your morning coffee, and go, go, GO! Your passion for your work doesn’t have to fizzle out. Here are ways to beat burnout before it burns up your career: Set Personal Boundaries to Ensure Work-life Flow Don’t burn the candle at both ends! Sure, you might get more done if you take work home. In fact, there’s no getting around taking work home. Let go of some of these “facts,” and recognize others. Work-life balance is dead and outdated to many, but the flow of your life and its priorities is still vital. Having a personal life is important to your well-being. Establish strong boundaries between your personal and professional life. It’ll be a rewarding change, even if it’s taken in small steps: Don’t check your work email an hour before bed or an hour after you wake up. When you take work home, take manageable tasks and the breaks that should go with them. Take your lunch hour at the gym once a week, on a specific day. Don’t change it. Tell your boss you don’t accept work calls after eight p.m. unless the building’s literally on fire. Use your time to connect with others, no matter if you are at home or work. Use your time to check in with yourself, no matter what you’re doing. Setting personal boundaries is not about building a brick wall between your personal and professional life. So what if work-life balance is dead? Find your flow, and remember to connect with loved ones. Follow Your Passion Many still don’t believe that there’s a place for passion in your career, unless you’re giving to charity. Passion is equivalent to getting a hobby to deal with burnout â€" it’s a nice thing that everyone needs but has no place at work. This is only a fact if you choose to believe it. If you’re consistently experiencing burnout and feeling depressed, the problem is deeper. Your career makes up a significant part of your time here on Earth. Do you want your tombstone to read “Paid the bills”? You’re not doing what you want and need to do with your talents. Following your passion is a laughable pipe-dream for some, but realistically your passion may simply be working for a company that has goals in line with your own. Being practical does pay off, but sacrificing who you are is costly, too. Feed Your Soul and Your Body! Passion and doing what you love is important, but don’t get a hobby. Get a lifestyle that you desire and deserve, and one that isn’t about all about paying the bills and getting shiny gadgets. Live your life, and seek out experience for fulfillment. Even science says life is better when you live it: Spending your income on experience instead of material items improves your happiness and health. Experience, here, also includes both the practical and passionate aspects of learning that build your career. Don’t just do what you have to do to survive. Nourish your body so that burnout won’t land you in the hospital due to a chronic illness, with symptoms you’ve always played down. You don’t want your body putting on the “Take a break now!” brakes like that, do you? The basic routines of properly eating, properly sleeping and spending time with friends and family are important to your health. Listen to your mother and your doctor, and attend to your daily needs to prevent burnout before it happens: Establish regular sleep periods to ensure you’re well-rested: Go to bed at your bedtime! Wake up at your wake up time! Drink more water, and eat your vegetables. Get your check-ups regularly. Move that body! Get your yoga on. Walk around the local park. Read a book. Read five. Join a book club. Take that pottery class! Then take another class. Say “No” when you mean it. Stop apologizing so much. Most importantly, check in with yourself. Are your needs being met personally and professionally? Nourish your body and your mind, and don’t view essential daily needs as burdens in your way of doing your best job at work. Don’t Excuse Burnout Culture Sure, awkward work-life balance is just the way that professional life works, but at what cost? If occupational burnout becomes an accepted standard within work culture, what does that mean for professionals? “Burnout” was a term first coined by psychologist Herbert Freudenberger in the 1970s, to explain the chronic stress and high idealized standards of those in the helping professions, such as nurses and doctors. Lately, occupational burnout or “burnout syndrome” has been reported so much among professionals and the media that researchers have been giving “burnout” serious consideration as an illness. Though burnout may have roots in depressive disorders, it’s becoming distinguished in other ways: Emotional exhaustion: You feel overloaded, apathetic and drained. Physical symptoms experienced: You have issues with stomach pains and digestive issues, primarily. Alienation from work activities: You are becoming exceedingly frustrated at your job, and express a cynical attitude. You may notice yourself becoming more isolated at work and even at home. Eventually, this leads to your performance at work suffering. You find it hard to focus or think originally enough to offer creative solutions. If you’ve noticed some of these signs of burnout, take steps to extinguish burnout before your career and personal well-being suffer. Burnout isn’t part of the job, and you weren’t born to pay bills and die. Find your work-life flow and protect it while nurturing your mind and body. How To Write A Resume For Grad School Applications

How To Write A Resume For Grad School Applications You may be asked to submit a resume or a Curriculum Vitae (CV), depending on the type of grad school program to which youre applying. Typically, writing a resume for grad school applications demonstrate your academic credentials, like research/awards earned, as well as your professional experience, although there is a tremendous amount of overlap. Generally, PhD and academic-based programs require CVs, and other grad programs ask for resumes. If you want to be a teacher, youll write a CV, and if you want work professionally, youll write a resume. But, make sure you know exactly which one youre supposed to write. Contact your school if necessary to confirm, as an error will likely automatically disqualify you. Your grad school resume is one of the keyfactors in your grad school applicationprocess. Most schools look at your GRE score and undergrad grades first; then move on to your resume, application essay, and interview. See more on how to improve your GRE score and improving your graduate school application. Graduate School Application Resume Checklist Contact Information Your name, email address, phone number. Personal Statement What are your goals for attending the graduate program? List of Research Projects Describe relevant research projects to which you've contributed. Work Experience List out prior jobs you've held, particularlythose relevant to the field of study. Undergraduate Education Detail your undergraduate degree and major. Additional Skills E.g. Computer skills, foreign languages, any other skills relevant to the program. Interests Describe additional activities or passionsthat may be relevant to the graduate program. While the above checklist is a handy tool to keep yourself organized, be sure to review each of those tasks in more detail below... Start a new resume for your grad school application Most students use previous resumes from internships or jobs for grad school. And thats exactly why most fall flat. You need to tailor your resume specifically to the grad school program youre applying for. If you mash it together, it will be painfully obvious.. Grad school personal statement What are you going to do in your career? Be a practicing psychologist? Engineer cars? Build computers? You need to directly state this in your personal statement and then elaborate on it throughout your resume. But, you need to say something more interesting than just I will build cars. Add in how youll help solve the energy crisis by creating fuel-efficient hybrids, or how youre interested in driver/passenger safety. The more focused you can be, the better. Examples: Energy expert who will use Stanfords Engineering Graduate Program to help solve the global oil crisis by creating more fuel efficient automobiles. Safety expert who will use Stanfords Engineering Graduate Program to save more lives by engineering safer automobiles. At this point, all you have to do is prove your statement, and youre in. Dont use summary/objective statement It will feel too immature. Instead, use a personal statement described above. Research applicable to grad school If you havent completed a research project, its time to start. Take your personal statement and create a research project. For example, something on alternate energy sources for cars, or opportunities for improved safety. But, if you have completed research, then direct your entire resume around it. If you researched the psychological effects of learning and found students learn best in one-on-one tutoring scenarios; then use that as your personal statement/theme. List everywhere you have been published (if applicable). Work experience You need to do more than just list your previous work experience. You have to use it to prove your personal statement. So, if you interned or worked professionally as an engineer, dont just list what you did. Make it prove your personal statement and sell it. If all you did at your internship was Google alternate fuel methods in cars, you still need to find a way to sell it. Heres how: Example: Explored opportunities for improved fuel efficiency with solar power, natural gas, and other resources in Toyota automobiles. Plant is still considering discovered opportunities, pending government legislation. Education prior to grad school Emphasize your work experience first, but you will still need one sentence stating what your degree was, when you graduated and your GPA. Then, describe the clubs or organizations you were in and what you accomplished. Try to relate this back to your theme, if possible. Example: Created blueprints for a fully-functional automobile that would reduce gas consumption by 20% through The Ohio State University Engineering club [or class you attended]. Volunteer work Just like research, if you dont have any, its time to start! Interests If youve done something cool like biking across America, include it here.
